What is Black Friday anyway?

Black Friday is the official first day of the festive shopping season. It is the day immediately following Thanksgiving in the United States. Thanksgiving takes place on the last Thursday of the month and the day after, Friday, is the day that shoppers rush to the stores to get started on their Christmas and gifting shopping spree.

Apparently the reason it’s called Black Friday is because it’s the day that American retailers make enough sales to take their financials into the “black” (as opposed to being in the “red” and owing money on their business). In other words, they make a profit from all their sales.

However the story is disputed. According to an article in Business Insider the term “Black Friday” was first used in 1869 by two investors who had driven up the price of gold and caused a stock market crash. Some merchants from Philadelphia attempted to change the name to “Big Friday.” The alternative name never caught on. By the 1980s the term “Black Friday” had spread widely across the US with the more positive “red to black” backstory.
